Hong Kong Plaque Medal awarded to Private J. Whitaker of the Shropshire Light infantry

A near mint example of this scarce medal awarded to a member of the Shropshire Light Infantry. The Whitaker medal appears in the definative book about the Hong Kong Plaque, THE WHITEWASH BRIGADE by Platt & Jones. The medal was sold through Glendining in their January 1921 sale.

A fine mid 19th Century watercolour portrait of a Light Dragoon Troop Sergeant Major

A very fine quality watercolour portrait dating from approximately 1830. Colours remain bright and unfaded, with just the slightest foxing in evidence to the background. Mounted in a gilt glazed frame. Overall size 10 x 13 inches.

Victoria Cross miniature group by Spinks and attributed to Sgt.Alexander Thompson of the 42nd Regt.Black Watch

Thompson was born in Edinburgh in 1824 and was awarded the Victoria Cross during the Indian Mutiny under the following circumstances, "For daring gallantry on 15th April 1858, when at the attack on the fort of Ruhya, in having volunteered to assist Captain Cafe, commanding the 4th Punjab Rifles, in bringing the body of Lieutenant Willoughby, og that corps, from the top of the glacis, in a most exposed situation, under heavy fire." London Gazette 27th May 1859. Thompson a veteran of the Crimea campaign died at Perth in March 1880.

Distinguished Conduct Medal awarded to Pte.Frederick Minster of the 1st Scots Fusilier Guards

Minster was wounded during the Crimean campaign and received the Distinguished Conduct Medal for bravery on the 26th March 1855, being one of approximately 800 men to recieve this new award. Minster was also awarded the Long Service Good Conduct Medal, the Crimea Medal (with all four clasps) and the Turkish Crimea Medal. One wonders where these other medals are now.

A rare Crimea officer's Royal Marine father and son group, apart of the Draffen Family grouping

The group consists of the Crimea medal with Sebastopol clasp along with Baltic and Turkish Crimea, all on original ribbons and still with original sprung top suspender for fitting to tunic as worn. The Crimea Medal engraved 'LIEUT.W.P.DRAFFEN.R.M.A'.Together with the medal group is an important miniature of William Pitt Draffen by the renouned artist, Augustus Barnard (signed to the side)A beautifully executed miniature with Draffen in the uniform of Lieutenant-Colonel of the Royal Marines (later rank). The portrait on ivory is contained in a typical mid-Victorian frame. The reverse of the miniature is plain, and a horizontal fixing has been fitted to allow for brooch style wearing. In addition is a fine miniature of William Draffen's father, Frederick Draffen housed in a typical Georgian frame and dating from 1810. Frederick Draffen's miniature has a fine and important hair-back, entwined with a small gold and pearl anchor bearing a central cartouche with 'FD' initials in white on blue.
Frederick Draffen entered the Royal Navy as a Master's Mate, and was awarded the N.G.S with 4 NOV 1805 clasp for Strachans Action following Trafalgar. He later became Commander of the Royal Navy. Frederick Draffen's son, William Pitt Draffen, entered the Royal Marines as a Lieutenant, by 1856 he was promoted to Captain, and he later became Lieutenant-Colonel of the Royal Marines. William Draffen's son, Frederick also went into the services, and in turn his son, Frederick G.W.Draffen also went into the services, later becoming the Lieutenant-Colonel of the Scottish Rifles and being awarded the D.S.O and an M.B.E. The Draffen family grouping was acquired by the well-known medallist and militaria specialist, Adrian Foreman, in the 1970s, and was later split up. A very rare (possibly unique) chance to acquire a medal group along with a portrait of the medal winner...and his father !

Crimea Medal (3 clasps, Sebastopol, Inkermann, Balaklava) & Turkish Crimea Medal to Pte. George King with the Scots Guards. King was wounded in leg & bayoneted in face at Inkermann

A very nice truly matched pair, with both medals bearing period engraving for Private George King. At Inkermann King was wounded in the leg and bayoneted in his face. The two medals are sold with copies of paperwork and both medals have survived with a nicely toned appearence. Both medals are still with original ribbons.

Crimea Medal (3 clasps, Alma, Balaklava, Sebastopol to Pte. James Manson with the 42nd Regt.Foot (Black Watch) Died: 2.6.1856

A very original example, uncleaned and surviving in excellent condition with very little wear overall, and still retaining its original silk ribbon (one clasp loose). The rim with correct regimental engraving 'Pte Jas. Manson, 42nd regt.Foot'.Luckily all the National Archive papers survive for James Manson, and copies are sold together with the medal. The papers tell us that Manson was born in Glasgow signing up for service in 1839. His character & conduct are stated as , "his character is that of a very good soldier, and that he is in possession of the good conduct badge."

Turkish Crimea Medal to Pte.George Sandham 5th Dragoon Guards

A good toned Turkish Crimea Medal with impressed naming to rim, 'NO 675 PT.G.Sandham. 5th Dragoon Guards', complete with straight suspension and original silk ribbon. Sandham was entitled to the Crimea Medal with Balaklava, Inkermann & Sebastopol clasps.He was also awarded the Good Conduct & Long Service medal. A full set of copied papers from the National Archives accompanys this medal. Sold through Spink in 1987.

Crimea Medal (1 clasp Sebastopol) to Private James Carter with the 88th Regt.Foot (Connaught Rangers)

A very nice example of the Crimea Medal (regimentally engraved) complete with original Discharge Certificate to Private James Carter, 88th Regt.Foot. The medal has survived in excellent to near mint condition with fine patina and original ribbon. The discharge certificate is dated 1857, and this is verified with photocopies of documents held at the National Archives. The documents state that Carter had been a good soldier and in possession of a Good Conduct Medal. They further state that due to a reduction in the Army, and the fact he was deemed medically inefficient for further service, that Carter be honourably discharged from the Army.

Crimea Medal, four clasps (un-named)

A fine example of the Crimea medal bearing all four clasps (Alma, Balaklava, Inkemann and Sebastopol), the medal has survived in excellent condition, still retains its original ribbon and has never been cleaned, hense it has the most beautiful matching patina. The original owner was later to emigrate to Canada, where it surfaced as a part of a house clearence in 2002.

Crimea Medal with three clasps to Private John Squire with the 44th Regiment Foot (casualty)

Beautiful crisp uncleaned example, surviving in excellent condition. Medal is complete with its original ribbon and has impressed naming. Squire is confirmed on the medal roll as entitled to three clasps and also states that he died on 2nd February 1956 after being wounded. Photocopied service papers included.

Russell's Maps to the Crimea

A set of Russell's maps completed just after the Crimea. These beaiutiful maops by Russel show troop deployment at the various battles. The maps are linen backed and are contained within their original red leather case. The case is nicely gold blocked to the front, and a label also states these maps were kept at the Military Cadet School.

Crimea Medal with Sebastopol clasp (unnamed as issued) along with citation to Private Humbert of the French 86th Regt. D'Inf.De Ligne.

Crimea Medal complete with clasp and in overall excellent condition (slight contact marks to the obverse probably from other French awarded medals). The citation states that Humbert was awarded the Crimea Medal by the British Governement for his part in the seige of Sebastopol.

Crimea War cased set of four miniatures by the prestigious firm, 'Hunt & Roskell'

Miniature medals include, Crimea Medal (Sebastopol Clasp), Turkish Crimea Medal, Baltic Medal and the China Medal (Canton 1857, Taku Forts 1858, Taku Forts 1860). All four miniatures are still complete with their original silver Victorian fixing clasps. Case is in burgundy leather with gold blocking to the lid, interior is fitted with blue velvet to the base and with blue satin to the roof, bearing the full gold blocked 'Hunt & Roskell' name. All four medals remain uncleaned and on their original ribbons and have survived in excellent condition (case has warped slightly with age, making it difficult to close on the fastener).
